If you wish to keep catfish in your freshwater aquarium then zebra pleco is one of the beautiful fish to keep. Zebra pleco is shy and nocturnal species that usually comes out at night to eat food. You’ll also find movement from this fish if you’ve darken the room or there is less light on the tank. They usually dwell near rocks or plants or even at place where there is cave like appearance for them to hide. They take some time to acclimate in the tank but once they get used to the tank there is no need to worry.

Zebra pleco is also known as imperial pleco. They’re rarely available in most of the small pet aquarium shops because of their high price and availability. You’ll be able to get them in most of the online aquarium shops in case if you failed to get it in any other aquarium shops.
Breeding: It’s easy to differentiate between male and female. Males usually have broad head and has pictorial fin thicker than the female. Female head is more rounder than the male. They usually spawn at warmer temperature i.e about 85°F or more. Female finds place like cave or shed like stones to lay eggs. Male usually guards eggs and spawning takes place in batches. In every batch there is likely to be 10-15 eggs. Eggs take one week to hatch and after 12-15 days they grow enough.
Food: You can give them zucchini slices,Tetra prima and other veg fish food like algae wafers. You can also give them flake food/frozen or live food, brine shrimp, blood worms. Try to give them variety of fish food as much as you can.
Behavior: They’re peaceful in nature and there is not much care you need to take for them. But they’re territorial with their own species so make sure you only add pair in your tank instead of adding group. Try to keep them with peaceful tank mates and avoid placing them with aggressive fish or fishes which are fast swimmers cause they’ll eat their food.
It’s very rare to get zebra pleco in most of the places so my suggestion is to purchase them online. Make sure you get their delivery in good condition and they’re younger. Zebra pleco catfish is perfect addition to your freshwater tank if it’s 30 gallons or more in size.
