Yellow Watchman Goby is known for it’s relationship with pristol shrimp as it alerts shrimp whenever there is any predator nearby. As shrimp can’t see the predator if it’s not closer so gets alerted from goby fish. In turn shrimp digs the burrow that both shrimp and goby can use to hide when predator comes. This helps both goby and shrimp to survive so this relationship will be seen if you place pristol shrimp and yellow watchman goby in one tank. Yellow Watchman Goby is usually found in western pacific and is rarely available in aquarium shops.
Other type of goby fish are : Firefish goby, Neon Goby, Diamond goby, Catelina Goby.
Size & Appearance: They grow up to the size of about 3 inches(8 cm). It is greenish yellow in color and front half of the body has small white spots. You’ll also see some white spots on their fins and tail as well. They require tank size of about 30 gallons.
ph & temperature: They’re not supposed to place in high temperature reef tank/saltwater tank. So you should maintain temperature at 25°C – 28°C and ph of about 8.1 – 8.4 with carbonate hardness 8 – 12° dKH.
Food: You can give them variety of marine foods. Their diet should be lake foods, frozen and live foods. Try to give them food as much as you can cause if they’re placed in tank with semi-aggressive fishes then they’ll often burrow themselves and will require food to stay there for long time. You need to feed them at least 2-3 times a day.
Breeding: It’s hard to differentiate between male and female so only aquarium shop and veterenan can help you with that. As for breeding in captivity there are some reports of breeding them in home aquarium successfully. You should have cave or hiding place where pair can place egg and guard them while protecting their own life. When fry hatches it’ll need constant food so make sure you supply enough food when there is spawning observed inside the tank.
Behavior: Yellow Watchman Goby is known for relationship with pristol shrimp. And goes quite peaceful with other invertebrates in the tank. Don’t place it in the tank with overly aggressive fishes. You can place them in tank of peaceful or semi-aggressive fish and they’ll have no conflict with them. They’re known for quite aggressive towards their own species as they’re territorial, so avoid placing them with other gobies. You can either place a pair or single goby for each tank. They’re resistant to most of the saltwater tank diseases but still you need to take care of them in case you put infected fish in the tank. If goby gets infected then you need to put them in quarantine tank for week or two.
They’re quite rare in aquarium shops and if placed they cost about 19-30$ for mature goby fish. If you keep them in reef tank or peaceful community tank then you don’t have to worry about them. Pristol shrimp and watchman goby fish puts quite a good show in your tank.
