Size: Guppy fish is found in the size of about 2-5 inches. Male guppy is in the range of about 2-3 inches while female guppy is in the range of 3-5 inches. Wild guppies are usually more smaller and males have multiple colors on body while female is brown or dull gray color. Females are dull in comparison to male guppies.
Food: There is nothing special food requirement for guppies. You can give them dried flake food, live food regularly. They do sometimes eat algae from the plants so you’ll find they’re eating plants as well. Their intake is large in comparison to other freshwater fishes so you need to keep them feeding with some live food after regular interval else they’ll feed on algae & plants.
ph & Temperature: You have to maintain the ph of about 7 to 8.5 in the tank. Other than that you need to maintain the temperature in the range 18-25deg.
Breeding: When it comes to breeding you’ll find that females dropping their eggs on monthly intervals. So if you want to prepare your tank for that then i suggest keeping some marine plants and marbles or even some coral shaped artificial plants. Plants will also ensure that fry will survive on it’s own without having to guard against other fishes. Keep the ratio of 1:3 for male to female for tanks with guppy fish. If you’re keeping guppies then i suggest keeping atleast 4-6 with male-female ratio as more males could tear off each other and keeping ratio constant will give less conflict among them. Guppies are also cross breed with Molly and always produce male guppy so if you’re keeping Molly and guppy in one tank then expect hybrid guppy. Make sure that there is some shelter to hide new fryes else they might get eaten by their own parents as well.
Characteristic and Behavior: You can mix them with other fishes like platies and Danio. They’re hard to maintain as female lays eggs every month if the ratio is not in proportion then it could be a problem of keeping large number of guppies in one tank. They’re peaceful but avoid smaller fishes than their size.
If you’re going to purchase guppies then i suggest you to take tank of about 20-25 gallon and pick group of 4-6 guppy fishes with male to female ratio of 1:3. Get some variety of aquarium plants and marbles and you’re all set with aquarium with guppy fishes. You don’t have to do much care for any other things related to guppy fish.
