Shrimps are the most common species in home aquarium. If you’re maintaining big aquarium then shrimp is good addition for the purpose of algae and parasite cleaning. Cherry shrimp and Skunk cleaner shrimp are preferred for saltwater aquarium tank but if you’re thinking about adding shrimp to your freshwater aquarium then ghost shrimp is one good choice. They’re relatively easy to take care of if the water quality is good and aquarium has lot of hiding places like live rock and plants,rocks.

Ghost Shrimp is also known with other common names like grass shrimp or glass shrimp. Because of their translucent body they’re called as “glass shrimp”. They’re quite common in aquarium trade and generally available easily all over the world. They’re used by fisherman’s as bait to attract fishes while clam fish farmers prefer to eradicate them.
Behavior : Make sure you don’t place them with larger fish or aggressive fishes. Placing them with aggressive fishes will result in death of shrimp. So choose tank mates carefully if you wish to keep them. Small-medium size fishes or peaceful species will co-exist with them. You’ll often find them in burrow or gravel and sometimes near live rock. You can keep multiple ghost shrimp in one tank if you’ve large tank.
Breeding: They’re known to breed in captivity. It’s hard to determine their gender. Pair becomes aggressive during breeding time and you’ll notice this if you’ve kept group of ghost shrimp in one tank. Female will carry eggs in her belly which you can see easily because of translucent body.
Food: Ghost shrimp is omnivorous in nature and will accept variety of food.They’re not effective algae eater but will prefer anything else that you put in the tank. You can give them flake food, frozen food and live food with other fishes.
They’re not susceptible to the fish diseases but are susceptible to the chemicals used to cure fish disease. So while using chemicals in the tank you need to remove shrimp out of the tank. They’re in expensive and are easily available in aquarium trade both online and offline. So if you wish to keep shrimp with peaceful fishes in your freshwater tank then ghost shrimp is good addition.
